Players from the St. Louis Cardinals and Colorado Rockies tilted their caps Saturday night in apparent protest of umpire Doug Eddings, one day after he instructed Cardinals rookie pitcher Hancel Rincon to straighten his hat during Friday's matchup.
Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman denied being the source of a complaint about Rincon's hat. "I never once mentioned the hat," Goodman told reporters in Denver, according to MLB.com. "It doesn't matter who's pitching. I don't care how they wear the hat. I'm trying to find out where the ball is coming out, and I'm trying to worry about what I'm doing in the box. I'm not worried about how his hat looks."
The incident occurred in the sixth inning on Friday. Multiple outlets characterized the Saturday cap-tilting as a show of solidarity with Rincon, though ESPN described it as a protest against Eddings, calling the umpire's move a "power-hungry" act. The nature of how Eddings came to enforce the hat rule—and whether he acted on his own or at someone's behest—remains unclear from available reporting.
