Dylan Cease kept the Blue Jays' playoff hopes alive Friday with a dominant performance against the Seattle Mariners, allowing just one run over six innings in an 8-1 Toronto victory.
Cease struck out eight batters while scattering four hits and one walk, according to reporting on the game. Yahoo Sports noted that Cease worked with "some of his worst stuff of the season" but still carved through Seattle's lineup by locating his slider and changeup effectively. The Mariners' only run came on a home run by the second batter of the game.
Toronto's offense provided ample support. The Blue Jays hit three home runs, with Nathan Lukes and George Springer each belting solo shots in the fifth inning, per Sportsnet. Third baseman Kazuma Okamoto also went deep, recording his 27th home run of the season. Manager John Schneider called it a "really good bounce-back win" after Toronto's 13-2 loss to Kansas City the previous day. Cease characterized the game's atmosphere afterward, telling media that "they all feel like must-wins" as the Blue Jays navigate a tight Wild Card race.
