The Commanders added defensive tackle Daron Payne to their injury report as questionable for Sunday's game against the Eagles. Pro Football Talk's Charean Williams noted that Washington had already ruled out defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw with a knee injury. Yahoo Sports said the Commanders could be without two key defensive linemen.
The questionable tag may not tell the full story. Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reported that Payne suffered a "significant" foot injury in Friday's practice. They said it will sideline him for the foreseeable future and likely lead to his placement on injured reserve. Rapoport added that Payne will undergo more evaluations Saturday. NFL Trade Rumors, which relayed the report, said Rapoport also raised a possibility, but its summary cuts off before saying what it is. NFL Trade Rumors' headline says Payne is possibly out for the season. Yahoo's headline goes further and says he is likely heading to IR.
The report also affects trade talk. Pro Football Talk said Payne had been expected to draw serious trade interest before the Nov. 10 deadline. Its summary does not say how the injury changes that, and we won't guess.
Payne has played in all six of Washington's games this season. He has 14 total tackles (7 solo, 7 assisted), 1 sack and 1 forced fumble. Kinlaw has played six games too, with 13 tackles and 1 sack. If Payne can't go, the Commanders would play without both of those interior linemen.
The team is already struggling. Washington is 1-4 and fourth in the NFC East. It lost 23-17 at San Francisco on Oct. 19, tied the Giants 27-27 on Oct. 11 and lost 30-13 to Indianapolis on Oct. 4.
Philadelphia comes in at 2-5 and has lost five straight, most recently 38-21 to Dallas on Oct. 26. The Eagles also lost 25-14 to Carolina and 19-17 at Jacksonville. Sunday's game in Washington kicks off a Nov. 1 matchup between two struggling division teams. Payne's status is the main question until the Commanders make a final decision, and Saturday's evaluation should settle whether he goes to IR.
