The Dallas Cowboys have waived quarterback Joe Milton, leaving Sam Howell as the primary backup to Dak Prescott, per multiple reports.

Milton, who spent last season as a backup in Dallas and appeared in four games, had been expected to compete for the backup role. His release came as the Cowboys made roster adjustments Monday to finalize their initial 53-man roster.

The waiver move created space on the roster for other roster moves. ESPN and Yahoo Sports reported the Cowboys used the spot to add free agent running back Emari Demercado.
