The Chicago Cubs reinstated right-hander Edward Cabrera from the 15-day injured list Saturday ahead of their game against Pittsburgh, placing right-hander Trent Thornton on the 15-day IL with a left ankle sprain. Per MLB Trade Rumors, Cabrera will essentially replace Thornton in the bullpen.
Cabrera had been sidelined since August 17 with a right middle finger blister. One outlet reported the Cubs plan to use him out of the bullpen for the remainder of the season, noting that Cabrera has been a starter throughout his six MLB seasons but that pitching fewer innings may help alleviate the blister issues he's dealt with this year. Manager Craig Counsell made the move to the bullpen, per ESPN.
Thornton's ankle sprain ended his availability for the Cubs' roster.
