The Dodgers are one loss from being eliminated in the NLCS. They will start Tyler Glasnow in Game 4 against the Brewers on Thursday, Yahoo Sports reported. ESPN framed the stakes: to stay alive, Los Angeles must make the type of comeback only one team has ever achieved.
Stephen Max Muncy gave the plainest account of how they got here. Posted on r/baseball, his comment on trailing three games to none was: "It's a pretty simple answer. We're playing like shit, and they're playing great. No reason to overcomplicate it." The Yahoo headline carries the other side of the clubhouse mood, a quote that "We just need to win tomorrow's game." The summary we have doesn't say who said it. The Muncy quote comes from a Reddit post, and we haven't seen the full article around it.
The scores back up a lopsided series, though the games were tighter than a sweep suggests. Milwaukee won Game 1 2-1 on Oct. 11 and Game 2 7-4 on Oct. 12. It then won 6-2 on Wednesday at Dodger Stadium. That makes five straight wins for the Brewers (103-59 in the regular season). The Dodgers finished 100-62 and won the NL West.
The box score from Game 3 shows how it slipped away. Los Angeles trailed only 1-0 until the sixth, when it scored two to take the lead. The Brewers then scored three in the seventh, one in the eighth and one in the ninth. Blake Snell took the loss after six innings, in which he struck out nine but allowed three home runs. The Dodgers stranded 19 runners to Milwaukee's 10 and went 5-for-32 with four walks. The Brewers' bullpen of DL Hall (2⅓ scoreless innings) and Trevor Megill (1⅓ innings, the save) closed it out after starter Robert Gasser threw five scoreless innings.
Glasnow's regular season was uneven. He made 13 starts and pitched 74.0 innings with a 3.53 ERA and 98 strikeouts, going 5-2. His last regular-season start in our logs was Sept. 12 at Miami, a loss in which he went four innings and allowed four earned runs on four walks. His best outing was eight innings of one-hit, shutout ball at San Francisco on April 23. The Dodgers need the version that struck out nine there. The reporting we have doesn't say what Milwaukee will do on its side.
Game 4 is Thursday, Oct. 15, at Dodger Stadium. If Los Angeles wins, the series returns to the same park Friday, Oct. 16 for Game 5. Game 6 is scheduled for Milwaukee on Oct. 18.
