Connor Hellebuyck stopped 19 shots, and Arseny Gritsyuk and Jack Hughes each scored twice as the Devils beat the Golden Knights 5-2 on Friday in Las Vegas. The AP report says Hellebuyck spent his first 11 NHL seasons with the Winnipeg Jets. It also says this was his second win since the Devils acquired him this month. The feed text cuts off before giving the trade date.
Vegas led 2-1 in the first period. The box score has it 2-2 after one, then New Jersey scored twice in the second and once in the third. Yahoo's game recaps agree on the shape of it. One said the Devils looked defensively suspect early and "really cleaned up down the stretch." Another said Hughes made Vegas's defense "look helpless" on a go-ahead goal. A third said a recurring puck-management problem hurt Vegas at the end of the first. That third piece also said the game was Vegas's annual Nevada Day game, played in road whites at T-Mobile Arena.
The box score supports the turnover theme. Vegas had 15 giveaways to New Jersey's 8, and the Devils had 7 takeaways to Vegas's 1. New Jersey outshot Vegas 32-21, even though Vegas had 35 hits to the Devils' 13. Gritsyuk took 8 shots and Hughes 7. Luke Hughes also scored, per the box score, and deadspin's snippet cut off just as it started to mention him. Barbashev and Mark Stone scored for Vegas, and Stone's goal came on the power play. Adin Hill stopped 26 of 30. That suggests the fifth New Jersey goal was an empty-netter, though no outlet we have says so.
Hellebuyck's season line in our tables stands at one game, a 5-1 win at Dallas on Oct. 27, with 17 saves on 18 shots. Adding Friday's 19 saves on 21 shots gives 36 saves on 39 shots over two starts. That is a .923 save percentage. It compares with his .895 in 57 games last season, though two games prove little. "Second straight" refers to his own starts. The Devils lost 5-2 at Colorado on Oct. 28 between the two wins, and our data doesn't show who started in goal that night.
Gritsyuk's two goals bring him to six goals and 10 points in 13 games. He is plus-5 on the year. New Jersey is 9-5 and second in the Metropolitan Division. Vegas is also 9-5 and second in the Pacific, and it has lost two of its last three. One of those losses was 2-1 at Columbus on Oct. 24.
New Jersey is home against Edmonton on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Vegas starts a road trip at Boston on Monday, Nov. 2, then plays at Pittsburgh on Nov. 3.
