Tatsuya Imai will not opt out of his contract with the Astros and will pitch for Houston in 2027. MLB.com's Brian McTaggart reported the decision. MLB Trade Rumors, citing Jon Heyman of the New York Post, said Imai will make $18MM in both 2027 and 2028. It also said he will get another opt-out opportunity a year from now, so this is a one-year deferral and not a long-term commitment.
The outlets describe the move differently. Yahoo Sports and Sportsnet framed it as Imai exercising or picking up a player option. MLB.com and MLB Trade Rumors wrote that he did not exercise his opt-out. The practical outcome is the same in each account: he is staying. The reports we have do not say whether the $18MM is a salary figure tied to a player option or the terms left after he declined to opt out, so the structure is unclear.
The decision follows a difficult first season in North America. Imai moved from Japan last winter, and Yahoo's Andy Backstrom noted that his 4.93 ERA came over 23 appearances, 15 of them starts. Our numbers fit that: 23 games, 76.2 innings, a 6-4 record and 97 strikeouts. The strikeout total is more than a batter per inning. The ERA is the figure that made the opt-out a real question. Sportsnet called it a "tough rookie season" and said he "will give it another go in Houston."
Houston finished 81-81 and sat first in the AL West in our standings. A pitcher with a sub-.500 club's worth of questions around him is now fixed in the 2027 plans. Houston's last three games in our data were a 13-2 win and a 9-0 win at the Athletics on Sept. 26 and 27, then a 7-3 loss to the White Sox on Sept. 30.
Imai was not the only roster decision in the MLB.com report. The Astros declined their option on right-hander Weiss, and a decision still looms on third baseman Paredes. MLB.com is the only one of the four outlets whose summary mentions either player. The summaries do not say what the Paredes decision involves or when it is due.
The next checkpoint on Imai is a year away. If he improves on the 4.93 ERA, the next opt-out window will be a very different question. Paredes is the nearer item on Houston's list.
