The NFL announced that Jay-Z will headline the halftime show at Super Bowl LXI at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. ESPN put the date at Feb. 14, and the Associated Press, via Sportsnet, carried the same news under the headline "Jay-Z to headline Super Bowl LXI halftime show."
The choice carries an obvious wrinkle. Yahoo Sports' Sean Leahy noted that Jay-Z's Roc Nation has had a deal with the NFL since 2019 to produce the halftime show. Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio called the selection of the show's producer "as expected," and Yahoo ran the same PFT item. CBS Sports' Shanna McCarriston was more pointed. Her headline said Jay-Z "picks himself to perform," and the piece opens by calling the announcement "a public service announcement sponsored by Roc Nation." The feed summaries don't say how the decision was made, so the outlets differ only in tone. None of them reports a process.
The reporting we have also gives no setlist, guest performers or other details of the production. ESPN's coverage includes a retrospective, "Jay-Z's road to the Super Bowl: Were the clues there all along?", on the breadcrumbs that might have pointed to this. That piece is speculation about hints, not reporting of a decision. ESPN and Yahoo each also published a list of past halftime performers. ESPN's summary says Bad Bunny "owned" the Super Bowl LX halftime show, which sets the bar for the act that follows.
The venue is SoFi Stadium, so the game is in Los Angeles. CBS labels this the 2027 Super Bowl, which is consistent with a February date at the end of the 2026 season. That season is still well short of its midpoint. The games that will decide who plays at SoFi in February are still being played, and the halftime act is settled before either finalist is known.
Nothing in the reporting says when more details, such as guests or the format, will be released. For now the NFL has confirmed the headliner, the stadium and the Feb. 14 date.
