JJ Jansen will become the NFL's all-time record holder for games played by a long snapper on Sunday, when he plays his 282nd game. Pro Football Talk's Michael David Smith reported it, and Yahoo Sports ran the same line. A r/nfl post also marked the record. The summaries we have don't say whose mark Jansen is passing or what he has said about it, so we won't guess.
The game is Carolina at Philadelphia, a Sunday, Oct. 18 meeting between the Panthers and the Eagles. It hasn't started.
Jansen's box-score line is a reminder of how little a long snapper does in the stat sheet. Our archive's most recent full season for him is 2023, when he played all 17 games and finished with two tackles, one solo and one assist, and no sacks or forced fumbles. His line is similar in the other seasons we hold. He played 16 games in each year from 2009 to 2011 and from 2013 to 2020, with 17 in each of 2021, 2022 and 2023. His 2023 line for 17 games is the same as his 2022 line. Our tables hold no 2026 stats for him, so we can't put a game count against the 282 figure.
Carolina arrives at 2-2 and in first place in the NFC South, on a one-game winning streak. The Panthers beat Detroit 32-26 on Oct. 4. Before that they lost 21-18 at Cleveland on Sept. 27, and they beat Atlanta 34-3 on Sept. 20. For a unit that only gets noticed when something goes wrong, the early results give Jansen's special teams no obvious problem to explain.
The record game comes on the road in Philadelphia, one week after Carolina's last result in our data.
