Jaguars coach Liam Coen says the blame for his team's three delay of game penalties against the Eagles belongs on his shoulders, ESPN reported. Pro Football Talk's Josh Alper, in a piece Yahoo Sports also carried, framed the comments as Coen saying he can do more to avoid them. Alper wrote that the Jaguars benefited from Philadelphia's poor clock management at the end of Sunday's game in London, but that their own miscues cost them a chance to take firmer control earlier in the fourth quarter. The feed summaries don't include Coen's full comments or say when in the game the three flags came.
The box score shows the penalties were part of a messy day. Jacksonville was flagged 13 times for 100 yards, against seven for 43 for Philadelphia. The Jaguars also went 0-for-3 in the red zone, and that is where a set of five-yard penalties does the most damage. Our data doesn't break out which penalties came inside the 20, so we can't say how many of the delay flags fell there.
The Jaguars still won 19-17 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Jacksonville outgained the Eagles 408 yards to 232, and Trevor Lawrence threw for 331 yards and two touchdowns with one interception. Parker Washington caught six passes for 124 yards and both scores. The Eagles led after a 14-point second quarter. Jacksonville outscored them 9-3 in the fourth, and Cam Little made both of his field goal tries, with a long of 57.
Jacksonville is 4-1, first in the AFC South, and has won three straight. The other two wins were 22-17 at Cincinnati and 35-6 over New England. Coen's point matters because the Jaguars have so far overcome self-inflicted trouble. Philadelphia is 2-3 and on a three-game losing streak, with losses to the Rams and at Chicago before this one, and it was the team that mismanaged the clock at the end in London.
Both teams play next on Sunday, Oct. 18. Jacksonville hosts Houston, and Philadelphia hosts Carolina. Coen has said he can do more to avoid delay of game penalties, and the Texas game will show whether the count comes down.
