Donovan Mitchell scored 26 points, five of them in overtime, as the Cavaliers rallied to beat the Timberwolves 127-125 on Monday at Rocket Arena. ESPN's recap noted the win came despite 47 points from Anthony Edwards. Yahoo Sports called it a clutch performance in a comeback win.
The box score for the game backs up Minnesota's control for most of it. The Wolves led by as many as 15 and led for 69 percent of the game. Cleveland's largest lead was five. There were 16 lead changes. Cleveland won the margins: 10 turnovers to Minnesota's 17 (19 counting team turnovers), 10 steals to 5, and 18 threes to 13. Minnesota scored 21 points off turnovers' worth of Cleveland giveaways to Cleveland's 8, but the Cavs shot 40 percent from deep on 45 attempts.
Mitchell shot 10-of-21, hit 5 of 9 threes and added seven assists. James Harden had 22 points and nine assists on 8-of-18 shooting. Sportsnet's highlight summary has Harden at 19 points, but our box score shows 22. Mitchell's line puts his season average at 9.0-of-17.0 from the field across two games, with 35.5 minutes a night.
The sharpest story may be Meleek Thomas. In his NBA debut he scored 16 points in 19 minutes, going 6-of-10 with four threes, and he was +1 on the night. ESPN reported that the Cavaliers credited him with sparking the overtime win. Yahoo's player grades said he "shined in his first NBA game." Reporting doesn't say when in the game his points came, so we can't say how many of them came during the comeback.
Edwards shot 19-of-33 with five threes and four turnovers over 41 minutes. His 47 points are well above his season shooting line of 10.3-of-23.3 over three games. Rudy Gobert had 19 rebounds but missed all eight of his shots. LaMelo Ball turned the ball over seven times.
Both teams are 2-1. Cleveland has won two straight after beating Brooklyn 125-121 on Saturday and sits third in the Central. Minnesota is third in the Northwest with a one-game losing streak that follows wins over Toronto and Miami. The Cavaliers host Washington on Wednesday, and the Wolves host Golden State the same night.
