No. 6 Alabama plays at No. 14 Tennessee on Saturday in the Third Saturday in October rivalry. CBS Sports' Matt Severance calls it one of four AP Top-15 matchups on the day. His preview, headlined "Home team has dominated series, Tide try to avoid back-to-back losses," centres on that home-field pattern. The summary we have doesn't give the figures behind it. Alabama is trying to avoid a second straight loss.
The Tide's one defeat came last Saturday, 20-17 against Georgia. Georgia is No. 1 in the latest AP poll. Alabama is 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the SEC, second in the league table, and held at No. 6 in the AP poll dated Oct. 11. Before the Georgia game it had won 56-23 at Mississippi State and 49-18 against South Carolina, so the offense has put up big numbers when the game wasn't tight.
Tennessee is also 5-1, but sits fifth in the SEC at 2-1 in conference play. Its record is the mirror image of Alabama's. Its only loss was 20-17 to Texas on Sept. 26, and it has won two straight since: 24-14 against Auburn and 24-17 at Arkansas. Both wins were by single digits or close to it, and Tennessee has allowed 17 points or fewer in each of its last three games. Yahoo Sports' Alabama preview of the Vols' defense says Tennessee "has found itself with a great defense" and asks whether Alabama can "break that spirit." That is the matchup to watch: an Alabama offense that scored 17 against Georgia against a defense that has held its last three opponents to 17 or fewer.
Alabama won the last meeting in our archive, 37-20 over Tennessee at home on Oct. 18, 2025. That fits the home-team pattern CBS describes, and this year the game is in Knoxville.
The other previews add little we can use. Yahoo Sports' game preview and SportsLine's model, written up by CBS's Adam Thompson as a "Week 7" best-bets piece, both focus on odds and picks. Their summaries don't give a spread or total, so we aren't quoting one. The Roll 'Bama Roll Friday roundup, by Joshua Chatham, spends its opening on the basketball team's exhibition win over Ole Miss and doesn't offer any football detail in the portion we have.
A win would give Tennessee a third straight victory and move it level with Alabama in the standings. Alabama would head into its next game with the Georgia loss behind it. Another Top-15 result in the same Saturday window is Missouri at Ole Miss (game page), where No. 9 Ole Miss, 4-1, hosts the No. 13 Tigers.
