The Packers lead the Panthers 19-10 with 1:46left in the second quarter of their Week 8 Thursday Night Football game at Lambeau Field. The outlets we track, mostly open threads and live-discussion posts, mainly set up the game as a meeting of two teams in the NFC playoff hunt. Our box score shows how it has gone so far.
Green Bay has controlled most of it. The Packers lead 189 yards to 80 and 11 first downs to 6. They are 5-for-7 on third down, while Carolina is 2-for-7. Jordan Love is 16-of-19 for 151 yards and a touchdown, a 117.3 rating. Christian Watson has six catches for 100 yards, including a 53-yarder. Tucker Kraft has a touchdown catch and Josh Jacobs has a rushing score, though Jacobs has 14 yards on 10 carries.
The Packers have made it closer than it needs to be. They have lost two fumbles, one by Watson and one by Coleman Owen, and kicker Trey Smack has missed one of two extra points. Bryce Young is 8-of-16 for 55 yards with an interception, which Ty'Ron Hopper made. Carolina's points came from a Chuba Hubbard touchdown run and a 39-yard Ryan Fitzgerald field goal.
The stakes are the reason the early framing matters. Niners Nation's Kyle Posey called it a "sneaky good game" and noted that Green Bay is last in the NFC North at 4-3. He put the Packers at 3-3 in the conference and 1-2 in the division. Carolina leads the NFC South at 3-3, with a 3-2 conference record. Yahoo's feed on that post asked whether the Panthers can "pull off the upset for the second year in a row." That is the only outlet to bring up last year, and we haven't checked it.
Both teams arrived off losses. Green Bay fell 20-17 at Detroit on Oct. 25 after beating Dallas 23-13 and Chicago 31-7. Carolina lost 43-13 to Tampa Bay the same day, after wins at Philadelphia and over Detroit. As of the Oct. 26 standings, Minnesota is 6-0 in Green Bay's division. The Packers' run differential was -1 and Carolina's -7, so a win helps either side.
Acte Packing Company's Evan "Tex" Western was the one writer to look outside football. He noted that the Packers play about 24 hours after Game 5 of the World Series, in which the Milwaukee Brewers clinched the championship, and that this game has "significantly less stakes." Blogging The Boys and the Reddit game thread added no detail beyond the matchup and records.
After tonight, both teams play next on Sunday, Nov. 8. Green Bay is at New England, and Carolina is home against Denver.
