The Detroit Red Wings named Shawn Horcoff interim general manager on Tuesday, per multiple outlets. Horcoff, who was serving as assistant general manager, will assume "day-to-day roster decisions, salary cap, and hockey operations personnel for the Red Wings," according to the team release.

The move comes as the Red Wings continue their search for a permanent general manager to replace Steve Yzerman, who has shifted into a senior advisor role for the franchise, per ESPN. CEO Chris Ilitch announced the changes two days before the Red Wings open training camp.

The timing of the move means training camp will begin without a permanent GM in place and without a captain on the ice, ESPN reported. Horcoff, the father of Pittsburgh Penguins prospect, will lead hockey operations during the interim period.
