The Red Wings beat the Oilers 4-3 in a shootout in Edmonton on Monday night. Dylan Larkin tied the game late in regulation, and goaltender Michal Postava stopped all three Edmonton shootout attempts. Yahoo Sports described it as Postava's first NHL start. Deadspin said Larkin scored a 6-on-5 goal with 1:17 left to force overtime.
The outlets credit different players. The AP recap, carried by Yahoo and ESPN, leads with Lucas Raymond, who scored the only goal of the shootout and added a pair of assists in regulation. The AP also lists Viktor Arvidsson and Emmitt Finnie as Detroit's other regulation scorers besides Larkin. The Yahoo feature on Postava and the Deadspin item lead with the goaltender and Larkin. The box score supports both. Raymond had two assists, and Postava stopped 25 of 28 shots through overtime, so he allowed all three Edmonton goals in regulation. Edmonton's Tristan Jarry stopped 26 of 29.
The AP also noted that the win left Detroit 2-1-1 on a four-game road trip. The earlier results fit that. The Red Wings won 5-2 at Vancouver on Oct. 22, then lost 4-1 at Calgary on Oct. 24. Monday's game was the second end of that back-to-back stretch for a team that had just scored once against the Flames.
The box score shows Larkin and Raymond leading the way. Larkin played 23:16 and took four shots, and he went 14-for-25 on faceoffs. Finnie won eight of his 13 draws. Detroit won 55.7 percent of faceoffs overall, outshot Edmonton 29-28 and went 1-for-4 on the power play. Postava faced six power-play shots and stopped all of them. Larkin has one goal and five points in nine games this season. Finnie has three goals and a team-best +7, and Raymond has five assists.
The standings still look tight for Detroit. At 5-4 the club is sixth in the Atlantic Division, though it has won its last game. Edmonton is 8-2 and first in the Pacific, but it has dropped two straight, losing 7-2 to Toronto on Saturday before this one. The Oilers' last three games went 6-5 over Carolina, 7-2 against Toronto and 4-3 against Detroit, a run that has included a lot of goals against.
Postava's season line is 36 shots against, 32 saves and four goals against, which includes Monday. The sources don't say whether Detroit will start him again. The Red Wings are home against Chicago on Thursday, Oct. 29. Edmonton hosts Calgary on Wednesday, Oct. 28.
