Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin is expected to miss "several weeks" with a shoulder injury, coach Ryan Day said, per Yahoo Sports. ESPN's headline says Day "estimates" the absence, so the timeline is an estimate and not a diagnosis. The reporting we have gives no return date and no detail on the injury beyond "shoulder." Sayin was hurt in the 19-15 win at Indiana on Saturday.

Yahoo's first alert and SB Nation's Mark Schofield both said Sayin left the game. Schofield framed it as one of the biggest games of the Saturday, between two top-five teams, being put "in the hands of a freshman backup quarterback." CBS Sports' Robby Kalland wrote that Luke Fahey "will likely be charged" with keeping the Big Ten title hopes and Jeremiah Smith's Heisman campaign going. That is CBS's expectation. None of the excerpts we have say Day has named a starter.

The box score shows Sayin was not having a clean day before he left. He was 15 of 29 for 235 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, and lost 26 yards on five carries. Fahey went 0 of 2 as a passer and had two carries for minus-2 yards. Ohio State finished with 316 yards to Indiana's 369, and won partly because the Hoosiers lost two fumbles. The Buckeyes also went 2 for 2 on fourth down. Smith caught four passes for 68 yards and a touchdown.

Sayin had been productive before Saturday. Across our 2026 game logs he has 2,007 passing yards, 19 touchdowns and four interceptions, including 367 yards and four touchdowns against Illinois and 324 yards and three touchdowns at Iowa. He also has four fumbles this season, one of them lost. Fahey's body of work is small. Before Saturday he had thrown 11 passes, completing nine, for 203 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, all in the Ball State and Kent State games. Our data shows 203 yards, 2 TD and 2 INT on his season line.

The win leaves the Buckeyes 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the Big Ten, third in the conference with four straight wins. Indiana is 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the league, first in the Big Ten, and its six-game winning streak ended with this loss. The Hoosiers play at Michigan on Oct. 24.

Ohio State's next game on our schedule is at USC on Oct. 31. That is two weeks away, so the first test for Fahey as a starter is a road game against a nonconference opponent. How Day's "several weeks" lines up with the rest of the Big Ten schedule will depend on updates from the program.
