Kyle Schwarber became baseball's first player to 40 home runs this season, hitting the milestone Wednesday as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Seattle Mariners 6-0.
Schwarber's 40th homer was a three-run shot off Mariners pitcher Bryan Woo, per Sportsnet. ESPN reported that the homer gave Schwarber his fourth season with 40 or more home runs with the Phillies, tying Ryan Howard for the most such seasons in franchise history.
The Phillies' victory was powered by Schwarber's power display and a strong pitching performance from Jesús Luzardo, who struck out nine batters in seven scoreless innings, per ESPN. Bryce Harper also contributed with a two-run home run.
