AJ Dybantsa, the No. 1 pick in the draft, will not play when the Wizards open against the Bucks on Wednesday, per the schedule in Washington. ESPN reported that an ankle injury will keep him out. Fans will have to wait for his debut, as Sportsnet put it.
Yahoo Sports gave the most detail on how it happened. Sean Leahy wrote that Dybantsa left Friday's preseason finale after landing awkwardly on his left ankle. CBS Sports' Robby Kalland described it as a rolled ankle and said Dybantsa is considered day-to-day. Only Yahoo names the left ankle and only CBS gives the day-to-day status. None of the reporting we have includes a return date or a diagnosis beyond the ankle itself.
Our archive has Dybantsa playing 15 minutes in the Wizards' 107-106 loss at New Orleans on Friday, Oct. 16. He scored 12 points on 4-of-8 shooting, with two rebounds and a block. That is the only game from that date in our data, and it is probably the one Yahoo describes. The archive does not say when in the game he was hurt. His 15 minutes were his fewest of the four games in our log, which also covers Oct. 8 at New York, Oct. 10 against Detroit and Oct. 12 against Brooklyn. In those he played 23, 23 and 25 minutes. He scored 11, 14 and 14 points in those three games, so Washington is missing a rookie who had scored in double figures every time out.
The Wizards are 2-2 in our 2027 records and have lost two straight. They went down 131-122 to Brooklyn on Oct. 12, then lost by a point in New Orleans after beating Detroit 114-108 on Oct. 10. They have not yet shown how they play without him.
Milwaukee arrives at 2-3, third in the Central, and coming off a 128-127 win at Indiana on Friday. Before that the Bucks lost 125-104 to Chicago and 105-90 at Charlotte, so they have won only once in their last three.
The next update is the Wizards' injury report ahead of their following game, at home against Toronto on Friday, Oct. 23. Because Dybantsa is day-to-day, that is the first realistic chance for his debut.
