Brewers manager Pat Murphy used the on-field celebration after Milwaukee's first World Series title to take a swipe at the Yankees. He did it as Jake Bauers gave him the ball from the final out, according to Yahoo Sports, ESPN and Deadspin. Yahoo's headline has Murphy calling the Yankees a 'horses--t' team. Deadspin describes the remark as profanity-filled and says it came just as Bauers, a free agent, presented the ball.
The fullest account is a Reddit post of the Spectrum News 1 Wisconsin footage. It quotes Murphy telling Bauers: "You're gonna make a lot of money. Just remember when you're on that horse shit Yankee team…everyone playing for themselves. Just remember." That is the only source we have with the full wording, and it is a user transcription of a broadcast clip. Yahoo's framing is that Murphy was joking about Bauers' free agency, and the quote fits that. ESPN and Yahoo both describe the exchange as viral. None of the summaries we have say what prompted the comment about the Yankees. We won't guess at it.
The joke works because of Bauers' contract status. He is a free agent, and Murphy's line is a warning about where the money might take him. SB Nation's James Dator, in a piece Yahoo also carried, set the moment against the idea that small, close-knit teams can still win while big-money clubs spend heavily in free agency and trades. Nothing in the reporting says Bauers has any interest in the Yankees, or that New York has pursued him.
Bauers gave Milwaukee a regular contributor this year. He played 144 games at first base and hit .266 with an .873 OPS, 26 home runs, 86 RBI and 127 hits. That production is why his free agency matters to the Brewers, who went 103-59 and won the NL Central.
The Yankees finished 93-68, second in the AL East. Our data shows them losing their last three games of the regular season at Tampa Bay (1-0, 5-2 and 4-3, from Oct. 3 to 7). There is no indication that any of that figured in Murphy's remark.
One caveat on our own schedule data: it lists the Brewers playing Tampa Bay on Oct. 26, 27 and 28 (a 10-1 win, a 4-3 loss and a 4-1 win), with Game 849801 against the Rays at Milwaukee still marked as not started for Oct. 30. That does not line up with the outlets' account of a completed title, and we are not reconciling the two here. Bauers' contract status is the open question, and no outlet has reported a timeline for it.
