Sixers wing Jaylen Brown will not play Friday when Philadelphia hosts the Knicks in its NBA Cup opener. Hoops Rumors' Rory Maher reported that Brown was first listed as questionable with left knee soreness, then downgraded to doubtful, and is now out. His designation is now left knee patellar tendinopathy, per Kyle Neubeck of PHLY Sports.

The outlets describe the injury a little differently. Yahoo Sports' Ian Casselberry and Sportsnet both use "left patellar tendinopathy." ESPN calls it a "left knee patella injury." Sportsnet adds that the team announced the decision before tip-off. Only Hoops Rumors describes Brown as a two-time All-NBA member and gives the original "soreness" listing. None of the reports we have gives a timeline or says how long he might be out beyond Friday.

Brown has been central to the Sixers' start. He has started all five games and averages 36.4 minutes, shooting 7.6-of-17.2 from the field (44.2%) and 1.8-of-4.4 from three. That adds up to 103 points, 33 rebounds and 21 assists over five games, which is about 20.6 points a night. Only Tyrese Maxey, with 142 points, has scored more for Philadelphia, according to our box-score totals.

His most recent game was Wednesday's 114-109 win at Indiana. He scored 20 points with 10 rebounds in 34 minutes, though he also had five turnovers. That win left the Sixers 4-1 and first in the Atlantic, with a one-game winning streak. The loss in between was a 106-93 home defeat to Detroit on Sunday, when Brown shot 5-of-20 and the team was outscored by 19 points in his 40 minutes.

Brown also has history with Friday's opponent this season. He scored 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting in 35 minutes at New York on Oct. 20. The Knicks are 2-2 and fourth in the Atlantic, but they come in on a two-game winning streak. They beat Detroit 111-97 on Tuesday and won 133-127 at Chicago on Wednesday, after losing 111-102 to Orlando on Sunday.

The Sixers will have to fill Brown's minutes against that form, and the reports do not say who will start in his place. Philadelphia plays again Saturday, Oct. 31, at Charlotte. Whether Brown is available there is the open question, and no outlet has addressed it yet.
