The Knicks have waived veteran swingman Bruce Brown and are expected to give their last roster spot to center James Wiseman. Hoops Rumors' Luke Adams said the team announced the move on social media. ESPN, citing sources, reported that New York is keeping Wiseman as it heads into the regular season. Yahoo Sports described Wiseman as "expected to capture" the spot, so the signing is not yet reported as done.

Hoops Rumors added the contract detail. Brown was one of five veterans in camp on a non-guaranteed Exhibit 9 deal. He survived the first round of cuts, and the site says the Knicks explored ways to keep him on the roster for the season. The feed summary cuts off there, so we don't know what those avenues were or why they fell through. None of the outlets we have gives a reason for choosing Wiseman. CBS Sports' Robby Kalland framed it as roster depth: Wiseman "will provide frontcourt depth for the reigning NBA champs."

Brown's recent production was modest. In 2025 he played 41 games for New Orleans and averaged 8.3 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists in about 22 minutes, shooting 42.1 percent. Our records show him last playing for New York on Oct. 13, in the 148-98 loss at Toronto.

Wiseman's 2025 was nearly empty. He played one game for Indiana and scored 6 points in 5 minutes. The year before, he played 63 games for Detroit and averaged 7.1 points and 5.3 rebounds, shooting 61.3 percent. That shooting figure is the best of his seasons in our data. The choice is a big man over a guard, and the reporting does not say whether the Knicks needed a guard or a center.

The Knicks are 1-4 and fifth in the Atlantic. They lost 122-104 to Minnesota on Oct. 12 and by 50 in Toronto the next night. They then beat the Raptors 122-120 at home on Thursday.

New York hosts Philadelphia on Tuesday, Oct. 20. That is the first game where the roster could include Wiseman, if his signing is completed as Yahoo and ESPN expect.
