Purdue and coach Matt Painter have agreed to a contract extension that keeps him with the program through the 2030-31 season. The school announced it Tuesday, per ESPN and the Associated Press. The AP lists Painter's age as 56 and says he will start the college basketball season with the new deal in place.
Money is where the outlets differ in detail. CBS Sports (Cameron Salerno) reports Painter will earn about $7 million this season and that the deal moves him into the top 10 of highest-paid coaches. Yahoo Sports, citing a source who spoke to IndyStar, reports that the extension and additional compensation push Purdue's coach near the top of the market. Another Yahoo item frames it as a pay raise for the 2026-27 season. The reporting we have gives no breakdown of the contract, no buyout terms and no figure from the school, so the $7 million is a reported number and not a confirmed one. The AP calls this "another" extension, but the summaries don't say what his previous deal included.
Our archive covers Painter's 13 seasons at Purdue, starting in 2014, and shows a 318-128 record, a .713 winning percentage. His first year, 2014, ended 15-17. His best season in the archive was 34-5 in 2024. The most recent one, 2026, finished 23-8, after a 24-12 year in 2025. That is the record the new money is attached to.
The season has not started. Purdue is 0-0 overall and in conference, and the Big Ten table lists the Boilermakers 13th only because no games have been played. The first game is Monday, Nov. 2 against Gonzaga. Nothing in the reporting says what, if anything, the extension changes about the roster or expectations this season.
