Basket Zaragoza, the Spanish club where Aday Mara played before his three seasons of college basketball, is contesting his eligibility to play for the Thunder. ESPN reported that the club says the rookie center is still under contract with it. CBS Sports' Cameron Salerno framed the dispute as an attempt to block Mara from making his NBA debut. Yahoo Sports' Dan Devine described it as a contract dispute. Yahoo also reported the Thunder's position: they insist Mara is eligible to play for them, even though his former club says it continues to hold his playing rights.
The feeds we have don't give the contract's terms, any buyout figure, or the venue or body where Zaragoza is pressing its case. They don't say whether the NBA or FIBA has responded. We have no statement from Mara or his representatives. ESPN and Yahoo both call it a challenge to eligibility. CBS's wording is about stopping a debut, and that is hard to square with our own records.
Mara already has five games in our 2027 logs, from Oct. 6 to Oct. 15. Our data doesn't say which of those were exhibition games. He scored 22 points on 10-of-10 shooting against Milwaukee on Oct. 7 and had 12 points and nine rebounds against New Orleans a day earlier. He then had 17 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks in 33 minutes at Atlanta on Oct. 12. Over the five games he averages 13.4 points and 7.6 rebounds, with 13 blocks in 96 minutes of floor time per game logged. If a ruling went against him, the Thunder would lose a rotation big who has been efficient in short minutes.
His last two outings were quieter. He scored 10 points with three blocks in 19 minutes in the 114-112 win over Indiana on Oct. 13, and finished plus-12. In the 116-89 loss at Houston on Oct. 15 he had six points, nine rebounds and four turnovers in 21 minutes.
Oklahoma City is 1-4 and fifth in the Northwest, on a one-game losing streak. It lost 113-110 at Atlanta on Oct. 12, beat Indiana, then lost by 27 in Houston. The Thunder next play at San Antonio on Tuesday, Oct. 20. None of the reporting says whether Mara's availability for that game is in question. The Thunder's stated position is that he is eligible, and for now that is the only guidance on his status.
