The NFL has cancelled a planned Steelers Fan House event in Paris ahead of Sunday's Week 7 game between the Steelers and the New Orleans Saints. Behind the Steel Curtain quoted the league's statement: "Following recent events in the Bastille neighborhood, and after careful consideration, we felt it appropriate not to move forward with the planned Steelers […]". The feed excerpt cuts off there, so we don't have the rest of the statement.
Deadspin described the event as a Steelers fan gathering scheduled for Sunday, cancelled amid civil unrest in the French capital. Behind the Steel Curtain referred to riots and protests that continue in the city. CBS Sports, in a piece by Carter Bahns, framed it as protests forcing the cancellation. It also reported that the game at Stade de France will proceed as planned, with the NFL working alongside local authorities and increasing security.
The reporting differs on who made the call. Yahoo Sports and Behind the Steel Curtain say the NFL cancelled the event. CBS Sports and Deadspin attribute it to the Steelers. The summaries we have don't settle that. Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, in a piece Yahoo also carried, wrote that the league's approach to the game has been to shrug and say "fi des torpilles." We don't have the rest of that article, so we can't say what it argues. None of the summaries we have say how many people were expected at the event or whether other fan events are affected.
The game itself is still on. Pittsburgh is 4-2 and third in the AFC North, with a two-game winning streak. It beat Indianapolis 34-22 on Oct. 11 and won 26-19 at Tampa Bay on Oct. 18. Its most recent loss was 27-24 at Cleveland on Oct. 1. The Steelers go to Paris with their routine intact, and the disruption so far has hit the fan-facing side of the trip, not the game.
Kickoff is Sunday, Oct. 25, in what the NFL lists as a road game for Pittsburgh at New Orleans. Whether the league adds further security measures or changes other plans around the game is the open question before then.
