The Saints beat the Giants 34-27 at MetLife Stadium on Sunday. They scored 34 consecutive points and then held on as New York rallied in the fourth quarter. ESPN reported that Tyler Shough threw touchdown passes to Bryce Lance, Alvin Kamara and Chris Olave, and ran for a score himself. It also said Isaiah Stalbird forced a fumble on a kick return.
Pro Football Talk and Yahoo Sports framed the game around J.J. McCarthy's first extended action as a Giant, calling the comeback "furious" but short. The box score shows how it ended. The last play was a McCarthy pass to Isaiah Likely, incomplete short left, and Saints cornerback Quincy Riley was injured on it. The sources don't say how serious the injury is.
The Giants led 7-0 after the first quarter, then scored only a field goal over the next two. The Saints scored 10 in the second quarter and 17 in the third, then added 7 in the fourth. New York scored 17 in the fourth. McCarthy finished 11 of 21 for 243 yards, one touchdown and one interception, and ran twice for 26 yards. Jameis Winston also played and went 14 of 26 for 152 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. The box score doesn't say why the quarterbacks split the game, and none of the reporting we have explains it.
Shough's passing line was modest. Sportsnet had him at 144 yards and three touchdowns, and the box score confirms 16 of 30 with no interceptions. The Saints' offense rested on the ground, with 175 rushing yards on 38 carries, led by Kendre Miller's 70 on 20 attempts. The Giants outgained them 461 yards to 319 and had 23 first downs to 18. They lost the turnover battle 4-1, with three interceptions thrown and a fumble lost. Martin Emerson Jr. had two of the interceptions and four passes defensed.
Malik Nabers caught 12 passes for 165 yards on 15 targets, and Likely had six for 99 and a touchdown. Their output was not enough against those turnovers.
New York is 3-2 and still first in the NFC East, but the loss breaks a short run. It followed a 27-27 draw at Washington and a 36-24 win over Arizona. The Saints are 2-4 and third in the NFC South. This was their first win after losses to Minnesota (23-13) and Atlanta (45-24).
New York travels to Houston next Sunday, Oct. 25. New Orleans hosts Pittsburgh the same day.
