The incident occurred while Bregman was in the on-deck circle during a plate appearance by teammate Michael Busch. According to Yahoo Sports, the foul ball hit Bregman in the left cheekbone. ESPN reported that Bregman was standing in the grass several feet in front of the on-deck circle when the incident occurred.
Bregman exited the game following the injury. The Cubs defeated the Reds 9-1, keeping Chicago atop the tight NL wild card race. On Instagram, Bregman posted a message thanking people for their support, stating "I'll be back," though test results on the extent of his injury are still pending.
