Alex Tuch scored twice and added an assist as the Washington Capitals beat the Montreal Canadiens 5-4 on Wednesday night, per the Associated Press. Jordan Kyrou had a goal and an assist. Justin Holl and Ivan Miroshnichenko also scored. Charlie Lindgren made 26 saves, and the win ended a two-game losing streak. The AP story, carried by Yahoo Sports and ESPN, is the only detailed account we have. Sportsnet ran the same wire headline, and ESPN's highlights page carried no text.
Our own records don't agree on the score. Our standings data and the final-score field in our box score list the game as 5-3. The box score's period-by-period line shows Montreal with 4 goals (2-1-1), and its player lines show four Montreal goals: two from Josh Anderson and one each from Nick Suzuki and Lane Hutson. That matches the AP's 5-4. The AP also has Lindgren at 26 saves. Our box has him at 25 saves on 29 shots, with four goals against. We'd treat 5-4 as the result until the 5-3 entry is reconciled. The saves figure is a smaller difference that we can't settle.
Tuch's night is confirmed in our box score. He had 2 goals and an assist on three shots, finished plus-2, and played 18:49, including 3:46 on the power play. Our season table shows him at 3 goals and no assists through six games, which looks like it predates Wednesday's game or doesn't count it. Even so, the box score has him on the ice for most of Washington's power-play time. The Capitals went 1-for-4 with the man advantage and also scored a shorthanded goal. Kyrou's line in the box matches the AP's: a goal and an assist on three shots.
Holl's goal was his second in two games this season, per our table, and he played 13:08 on the blue line. Miroshnichenko scored in 10:01 of ice time. Our table shows his 2026 line at 2 goals and an assist in 13 games, which doesn't include this year's games. Lindgren took the win in goal. Montreal's Jakub Dobes was in goal for the Canadiens and the box has him facing 24 shots.
The Capitals are 4-3 and third in the Metropolitan Division. They had lost 5-3 to Seattle on Sunday and 3-2 at Carolina on Tuesday before this game. Montreal is 3-3 and sixth in the Atlantic. It had beaten Buffalo 4-3 on Tuesday and Detroit 1-0 last Saturday before this loss.
Both teams play again Saturday, Oct. 17. Washington hosts New Jersey, and Montreal hosts Buffalo, which it beat 4-3 on Tuesday.
