The Hanshin Tigers announced that Teruaki Sato will be posted for Major League teams this offseason, according to MLB Trade Rumors' Mark Polishuk. MLBTR said the posting had been rumored for months. It also reported that at least five MLB clubs, and likely many more, have shown interest in the reigning Central League MVP.
Sato is 27 and was listed as a third baseman in our player database. ESPN, citing the Japanese news agency Kyodo, described him as a slugger. It also noted that he played for the Japanese national team that reached the quarterfinals of this year's World Baseball Classic. Yahoo Sports called him one of Japan's biggest stars and a top free-agent target this winter. It framed the posting as coming early in the free-agency period.
The outlets differ on how firm the news is. MLBTR has Hanshin announcing the move officially. Sportsnet's headline calls it a report that Sato "will be" posted. ESPN's summary has Sato himself "aiming" to move through the posting system, based on Kyodo. None of the summaries we have gives a posting date, a posting fee, or a name for any interested club. The names of the five-plus clubs are not in the material we have.
We can't add much on Sato's MLB track record. The only games under his name in our archive are two from March 2025: 1-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base against the Cubs on March 15, and 1-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs against the Dodgers on March 16. That is eight at-bats, and we hold no Major League regular-season line for him. His case rests on his Japanese production and the MVP award, and our tables don't cover either.
This Hanshin Tigers are a separate club from the Detroit Tigers, whose own 2026 season ended 76-86, fourth in the AL Central, with a 4-2 loss to Pittsburgh on September 27. Nothing in the reporting links Detroit to Sato, and we won't suggest otherwise.
What comes next is the posting window itself and the first reports of which clubs are bidding. The reporting we have doesn't give dates for either. Interest is already described as broad, so Sato's market looks likely to take shape in the first weeks of the offseason.
