Kamario Taylor will miss the rest of the 2026 season. Mississippi State's quarterback needs surgery on an injured toe, ESPN reported, and it called him college football's breakout star this season. CBS Sports, which also noted the surgery, said he was one of the breakout players early in the year. Yahoo Sports' Nick Bromberg wrote that Taylor had been dealing with the injury for weeks and left the Bulldogs' loss to Oklahoma in the first half. Another Yahoo piece said he tried to play through it before the school shut down a player it described as a Heisman contender.

Our box score of the 23-15 loss to Oklahoma on Oct. 24 shows how little he could do. Taylor went 2 of 5 for 10 yards with no touchdowns. He also had three carries for minus-12 yards. Parker Puckett took over and went 17 of 24 for 158 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Sam West added an 18-yard touchdown pass on his only throw. Mississippi State converted just 1 of 11 third downs.

Before the injury took hold, Taylor's early numbers backed the breakout label. In the games our log holds for him this season, he threw for 354 yards and four touchdowns against ULM and 360 yards and three touchdowns against Missouri. Across the six games in the log he has 1,460 passing yards, 17 touchdowns and four interceptions, and he completed 104 of 159 passes. He also ran for 147 yards, including 86 at Minnesota. Ball security was a weakness: he has three fumbles this season, all lost.

The decline is visible in the log. After the Missouri game, he threw two interceptions and ran for minus-26 yards in a 56-23 loss to Alabama on Oct. 3. Our log has no entry for him in the Oct. 17 game at LSU, which Mississippi State lost 31-0. We can't say from the data why he is missing from it, and none of the outlets we have addressed that game. Yahoo's report of weeks of trouble with the toe fits the timeline, but it is the only account that says so.

Data: ESPN

The Bulldogs opened 4-0, scoring 62, 38, 41 and 31 points. They have lost three straight since, and they have scored 38 points in those games combined. They are 4-3 and have been outscored 110-38 in those three losses. Oklahoma, the opponent on Saturday, is also 4-3 and plays South Carolina next.

The reporting does not name a starter for the rest of the year, and it gives no recovery timeline beyond the season-ending designation. Puckett played most of the Oklahoma game, which makes him the obvious candidate. Our data does not yet list Mississippi State's next opponent.
