Jalen Hurts is expected to miss the rest of the 2026 season after further testing found blood clots in his lungs. The Eagles announced the diagnosis Monday. CBS Sports' Bryan DeArdo reports that the quarterback is clinically stable and expected to make a full recovery, but cannot take part in contact activities. Yahoo Sports describes the Super Bowl LIX MVP as out for the season. Its wording leans on other outlets' reporting, and the 'expected to miss' language in the CBS headline is the more cautious framing.

The timing is the uncomfortable part. Hurts played last week at Jacksonville, a 19-17 Eagles loss in London. Yahoo Sports reports he was told not to sleep before that game, and that he did not. The outlet gave no explanation beyond a teaser line. Awful Announcing's Drew Lerner wrote that people began questioning how Hurts was allowed to play, and he criticized Tom Pelissero for framing the episode as a tough-guy story instead of organizational malpractice. A Reddit post highlights a clip from four days earlier in which NFL Network analyst Michael Robinson said Hurts looked like he was 'getting himself out of the fray so that this lost season... he's pulling himself out so that this doesn't look like it's on me.' That is one analyst's read of a game, shared on a forum. It comes before the diagnosis, and nothing in our material connects it to the clots.

Hurts' line from that game: 21 of 40 for 220 yards and a touchdown, with one sack and two fumbles, both recovered by the Eagles. He appears in our game log for five games this year and not in the 25-14 home loss to Carolina on Sunday. He has 933 yards, eight touchdowns and three interceptions on 89-of-154 passing (57.8 percent), plus 107 rushing yards and a score. He was sacked 13 times, four of them in the Week 4 loss to the Rams, when he threw for 93 yards.

The season Hurts leaves behind was already slipping. Philadelphia is 2-4, on a four-game losing streak, third in the NFC East and 1.5 games behind the 3-2 Giants. Its run differential of minus-31 is the second worst in the division, behind only Washington's minus-34. Three of the losses were by a combined 15 points: 24-20 to the Rams, 19-17 at Jacksonville and then Carolina.

CBS Sports' DeArdo argues in a second piece that the Eagles have little reason to tank on purpose. He says an upcoming three-game divisional stretch will show whether they can salvage the year. The first of those games is Monday, Oct. 26 against Dallas, which is also 2-4. Fantasy fallout for Saquon Barkley, DeVonta Smith and the other skill players is the subject of Yahoo's Hayden Winks. The reporting we have does not say who will start at quarterback. ESPN has run a piece in which a medical professional explains the causes, treatments and outlook for blood clots.
