The Steelers are re-signing linebacker Elandon Roberts, per Alan Saunders of Steelers Now. Roberts is scheduled to visit Pittsburgh on Monday with the intention of finalizing a deal.
Roberts, 32, was a fourth-round pick by the Patriots in the 2016 NFL Draft. He spent four years in New England on his rookie contract—worth $2,440,356 total—before entering the open market as an unrestricted free agent. The Steelers signed him during the preseason and he was widely expected to make the 53-man roster, but he was cut in a surprise move ahead of the regular season.
Now he returns to bolster a linebacking corps that has taken on added importance as Pittsburgh navigates the middle of its season. The Steelers are 2–2 after winning 34–22 against Indianapolis on Sunday but falling 27–24 at Cleveland on October 1. Roberts played in all 17 games for Pittsburgh last season, recording 90 tackles (42 solo, 48 assisted) with no sacks or forced fumbles. His previous stint with the team showed he could be counted on for depth and availability in the middle of the defense.
The Steelers play at Tampa Bay on October 18.
