Patrick Kane now holds the NHL record for career assists by a U.S.-born player. Per Pro Hockey Rumors, he recorded his 895th in Thursday's 4-3 overtime win over the Winnipeg Jets, which passed Phil Housley's 894. ESPN reported that Kane added another assist on Artyom Levshunov's goal 1:37 into overtime, which took his total to 896. Pro Hockey Rumors also noted that Kane is already the all-time leader in points by an American skater.
The box score backs that up. Kane had two assists, no goals and two shots in 17:53, and he was on the ice for 3:42 of Chicago's power-play time. The two Kane assists that the box score credits, together with the 895-to-896 sequence in the reporting, mean the record-setter and the winner were separate plays. The AP game story, carried by Yahoo and ESPN, leads with Levshunov's goal and puts the record second. Sportsnet's video recap highlights Kane and Connor Bedard with two points each. Bedard scored once and added an assist.
Chicago scored three times in the first period and led 3-0 after 20 minutes. Winnipeg then scored once in each of the next two periods to tie it at 3-3, and the Blackhawks needed overtime. Winnipeg outshot Chicago 34-28, though Spencer Knight stopped 31 of them. Neal Pionk had a goal and two assists for the Jets, and Kyle Connor and Alex Iafallo also scored. Winnipeg also outhit Chicago 33-18, but Chicago blocked 15 shots to the Jets' 8.
The win leaves Chicago 3-5 and eighth in the Central Division, but it has won two straight after a 5-2 loss to Carolina on Oct. 10. The previous win was 5-3 over Pittsburgh on Tuesday. Winnipeg is 4-1, third in the division, and the one-goal loss ends a stretch in which it had beaten Minnesota 5-2 on Tuesday. The Jets lost 5-1 to Anaheim on Oct. 9.
The archive's most recent full-season line for Kane is 2025 with Detroit: 72 games, 21 goals, 38 assists and 59 points. He has therefore added to the total after a season in which he had 38 assists, and our tables hold nothing yet for his 2026-27 games. The sources also leave open when he reached each milestone in his career. The reporting gives only the 894 mark for Housley and Kane's figures of 895 and 896.
Chicago plays again Saturday at home against Dallas, with a chance to make it three straight wins. Winnipeg is at home against Carolina the same day.
