The Thunder have agreed to a five-year, $139 million rookie scale extension with guard Cason Wallace, ESPN's Shams Charania reported. Hoops Rumors said the deal came one day before the October 19 deadline for rookie scale extensions. It described the agreement as a major investment in the 22-year-old, who it said is likely to inherit a larger role.
The outlets differ on what that role is. Yahoo Sports said Wallace is set to move into the starting lineup. Hoops Rumors called him a defensive-minded guard. CBS Sports' Sam Quinn framed the deal around payroll. He wrote that it follows an offseason of moves meant to shed salary and duck under the second apron, and that it sets up another summer of second apron questions. The reporting we have doesn't give a breakdown of the deal's structure beyond the headline figures.
Wallace's numbers show why the defensive label fits. Last season he averaged 8.6 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 26.6 minutes over 77 games, with 58 starts. He also averaged 1.9 steals, up from 1.5 the year before in 82 games, and 0.4 blocks. He shot 43.2% overall and 35.1% from three on 3.7 attempts a game, a drop from 47.4% overall in 2025. So the extension is a bet on defense and growth more than on scoring. He has already been a regular part of the rotation.
The team around him has started slowly. Oklahoma City is 1-4, fifth in the Northwest Division, and has been outscored 117.0 to 109.8 per game across those five. Its most recent game was a 116-89 loss at Houston on October 15. Before that it beat Indiana 114-112 at home and lost 113-110 at Atlanta. The two earlier home games were a 128-126 loss to Milwaukee and a 116-110 loss to New Orleans. Two of the five losses came by three points or fewer, and the defense has allowed more than 110 in every game.
The Thunder next play at San Antonio on Tuesday, October 20. That game gives them a chance to show the defensive improvement the new contract is meant to secure.
