Jerry Koosman, the left-hander who was part of the Mets team that won the 1969 World Series, has died at 83. Koosman's death was announced by the club, per MLB Trade Rumors. MLB.com's Bill Ladson wrote that he clinched that World Series. None of the other summaries we have say how he died, and none give a date or details of services.
MLB Trade Rumors' Mark Polishuk noted that Koosman pitched 19 major league seasons and spent the first 12 with New York. CBS Sports' Mike Axisa reported that the Mets inducted him into their Hall of Fame in 1989 and retired his No. 36 in 2021. Yahoo Sports described him as a two-time All-Star and a "workhorse left-hander" who helped lead the Mets to an unexpected title in 1969.
BenchScout's archive backs up the workhorse label. In 1968, his first full season, he went 19-7 in effect, with 19 wins, a 2.08 ERA and 178 strikeouts over 263.2 innings. In the championship year of 1969 he won 17 games with a 2.28 ERA and 180 strikeouts in 241 innings. He topped 260 innings again in 1973 (2.84 ERA) and 1974. After leaving the Mets he won 21 games in 1976 with a 2.69 ERA and 200 strikeouts, which makes him a 20-win pitcher by our archive's count.
The archive also covers his later career. In 1979 he won 20 games with a 3.38 ERA over 263.2 innings. His last season of data is 1985 with the Philadelphia Phillies, when he was 42. He made 19 appearances, 18 of them starts, and went 6-4 with a 4.62 ERA. He also hit .088 (3 for 34), a reminder that he spent most of his career as a pitcher in an era when pitchers hit. A year earlier, at 41, he made 36 appearances and 34 starts, winning 14 games with a 3.25 ERA over 224 innings.
The Mets finished 2026 at 74-88, fifth in the NL East. They lost 6-4 at Washington on Sunday, Sep. 27, in their final game, after a 7-1 win on Sep. 26 and a 7-6 loss on Sep. 25. The club has not said anything beyond its announcement in the material we have. The next thing to watch is whether the Mets mark his death with a tribute when the 2027 season opens. That would be the club's decision, and no outlet has reported any plan.
