The Dodgers are down 2-0 to the Brewers in the NLCS and will start Blake Snell in Game 3 tonight at Dodger Stadium. CBS Sports' Matt Severance calls it essentially a must-win home game. He also reports that Shohei Ohtani, described as struggling, will be in the lineup.
Ohtani's struggles show up in the series box scores. In the 2-1 Game 1 loss on Oct. 11 he went 1-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout, and his average for the postseason stood at .188 afterward. In the 7-4 loss the next day he went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts, and that average fell to .150. The regular season looked very different: 30 homers, 81 RBI and an .889 OPS in 139 games. Yahoo Sports asks whether manager Dave Roberts will bench him. The summary we have for that piece spends its space on the Red Sox ties of Roberts and Mookie Betts, so it doesn't show what the answer is. The CBS report that he is in the lineup is the only word we have on the question.
Snell was one of the Dodgers' steadier arms this year, with a 1.90 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 42.2 innings over nine starts. His workload was short, though. His last three outings ran 1.0, 4.0 and 3.2 innings. The most recent was Oct. 4 against Atlanta, when he walked five and gave up one earned run. Los Angeles will need length from him against a Brewers team that scored seven in Game 2.
Game 1 was a pitchers' duel. The Dodgers stranded 20 runners and lost 2-1 despite drawing six walks. Game 2 went the other way. Milwaukee had 12 hits and scored seven runs, with two runs in the eighth, and Los Angeles managed only three hits and committed two errors. Milwaukee, 103-59 and the NL Central winner, has won five in a row. The Dodgers finished 100-62 and took the NL West.
The betting side is mixed. Deadspin's picks lean on a Dodgers moneyline and the Under 7.5. SportsLine's model, in a separate CBS piece by Daniel Kohn, simulated the game 10,000 times. The summary we have doesn't say what it favored. The Dodgers' offense has produced five runs in two games. Both of Deadspin's leans line up with an expectation of a low-scoring game, but Game 2 shows how fast that can change.
Game 3 is Wednesday, Oct. 14, and the series stays at Dodger Stadium for Games 4 and 5 on Oct. 15 and 16.
