The Mavericks beat the Heat 113-109 at Kaseya Center on Monday night. Cooper Flagg led the way, and Miami is now 0-4 by ESPN's count. Yahoo Sports said Dallas "vaulted ahead in the fourth," and Dallas did outscore Miami 30-25 in that quarter. ESPN's recap said Flagg blocked a shot that would have given Miami the lead in the final moments.

The outlets disagree on one line of Flagg's stat line. ESPN has him with 29 points and 11 assists. Sportsnet's highlight summary says 29 points and 11 rebounds. Our box score backs ESPN: Flagg had 29 points on 12-of-23 shooting, 11 assists, six rebounds, four steals and two blocks in 40 minutes. He also had five turnovers. P.J. Washington added 20 points and nine rebounds, as Sportsnet noted. Walter Clayton Jr. scored 15 points off the bench on 6-of-7 shooting and was a +22 in 17 minutes. Kyrie Irving had 18 points and six assists.

Flagg's output fits what he did in the first week. He scored 32 points at Houston on Oct. 21 and had 26 against Atlanta on Oct. 16. Last season he averaged 21.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.5 assists over 70 games. Monday was his highest assist total in the five 2027 games we have logged. The previous high was seven, at Houston on Oct. 11.

Miami's problem wasn't Giannis Antetokounmpo. He had 29 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists, a triple-double that Yahoo's Jason Owens framed as production that "isn't translating to wins." He shot 12-of-23 but made only 3 of 7 free throws, and he committed five turnovers. Miami led by as many as 12 and held the lead for 58 percent of the game, but it gave that away late. The Heat went 14-of-25 at the line (56 percent), while Dallas went 13-of-14 despite being called for 23 fouls to Miami's 14. Miami also shot 13-of-41 from three. Davion Mitchell scored 21 points, and Andrew Wiggins and Pelle Larsson each had 12.

The loss is Miami's third straight by single digits or worse. It lost 131-106 to Minnesota on Oct. 21, then 115-110 at Charlotte on Oct. 24. The Heat are 0-3 in our standings, fifth in the Southeast. Dallas is 1-2 and fourth in the Southwest. Before Monday it had lost 128-110 at Houston and 122-106 to San Antonio, so this is its first win of the season.

Both teams play Wednesday, Oct. 28. Dallas hosts Oklahoma City, and Miami visits Atlanta looking for its first win.
