The imaging revealed inflammation but no structural damage, per multiple reports. Cease told reporters he was diagnosed with the shoulder inflammation following his Friday start in Texas.
While the absence of structural damage is considered positive news, the 28-year-old's 2026 season appears to be over. MLB.com reported Cease is uncertain for the remainder of the year, and Yahoo Sports indicated the season is "probably over" for the likely AL Cy Young finalist. Cease will not pitch in this week's series at Camden Yards. The right-hander will have the off-season to build back up from the injury.
