The Bears have made their trade for Jeffery Simmons official. Per Windy City Gridiron's Lester Wiltfong Jr., Chicago sent a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 first-round pick and a 2027 fourth-round pick to the Titans for the defensive tackle and a 2027 pick that the feed summary cuts off. NFL Trade Rumors, which called Simmons an All-Pro, described the return as two first-rounders and a swap of mid-round selections.

The outlets differ on the order of events. Windy City Gridiron said the trade was reported earlier Thursday morning. It said Tennessee announced it in a statement and at a press conference, and that Chicago confirmed afterward. Yahoo's roundup says Simmons has already been to Halas Hall. Windy City Gridiron's Ken Mitchell added a caveat: the Bears have the best defensive tackle in the league "assuming he passes his physical today." None of the material we have says whether that physical is complete.

Mitchell also reported that general manager Ryan Poles went all in as the trade deadline approached. He wrote that the deal was designed to add pass defense, and he noted that Simmons joins his old college teammate Montez Sweat. Yahoo's Nate Tice called Simmons a one-man game-wrecker on every down and in every situation. He said that would give a needed lift to a defense that has been punching above its weight this season despite some flaws. NFL Trade Rumors said most attention had been on the Colts and their ongoing fire sale, while the Titans quietly worked on this deal.

The numbers fit the picture of a team buying. Chicago is 5-2, second in the NFC North, and has won two straight, 31-23 at Atlanta and 30-24 over New England last Thursday. Before those wins it lost 31-7 at Green Bay on Oct. 11. Simmons arrives with 38 tackles, 4 sacks and a forced fumble in seven games this season.

Tennessee is 1-6 and fourth in the AFC South. It lost 27-24 to Cleveland on Sunday and plays at Cincinnati on Nov. 1 without its best defender. Yahoo's Tennessee item says only that the Titans are preparing for that Week 8 game.

Chicago's next game is Monday, Nov. 2, at the Seahawks. Seattle is 4-3 and second in the NFC West, and it beat Kansas City 20-3 last Sunday. Yahoo's Bear's Den post says the team is preparing for that Monday night game as the Simmons era begins. Whether he plays after a same-week trade and physical hasn't been reported.
