The Rays beat the Guardians 7-3 at Progressive Field on Saturday night, and the ALCS is tied 2-2. MLB.com's headline called it a slip past Cleveland. ESPN's framing was that Tampa Bay "capitalize[d] on Guardians' errors." Sportsnet's clip shows the decisive swing: Yandy Díaz went to right field for a two-run homer in the top of the ninth, which put the Rays up by four.
The box score supports ESPN's version. Cleveland made two errors, one in the first inning and one in the seventh. Tampa Bay also outhit Cleveland 11-8, but it left 14 men on base and struck out 12 times, so the hits alone didn't decide the game. The Rays scored once in the third and once in the sixth. They scored three in the seventh and two more on Díaz's homer. Díaz finished 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Jonathan Aranda and Richie Palacios each had three hits.
Cleveland scored in the first inning and had only one hit after that until the seventh, when it scored twice. One of those runs came from Travis Bazzana's first career postseason homer. That detail comes from the r/baseball post, which was a clip shared because the homer wasn't posted during the game. The box score agrees: Bazzana went 2-for-3 with a walk, a run and an RBI. He hit 15 homers in 124 games this season and batted .245 with a .743 OPS, so a home run from him is not routine. It was a small part of a game Cleveland lost.
Nick Martinez got the win after 5.1 innings in which he allowed one run on two hits. Daniel Espino took the loss after recording one out and walking two in the seventh. Matt Festa gave up two runs in 1.1 innings, including a homer. Cleveland used six pitchers after its starter. Tampa Bay used six as well, and Freddy Peralta, Cam Booser and Bryan Baker each finished without allowing a run.
Tampa Bay won 3-1 on Tuesday, Cleveland won 3-2 on Thursday, and the Rays took Saturday. The Rays finished 98-64 and won the AL East. The Guardians were 85-77 and won the AL Central. Cleveland's margin in this series has been narrow, and Saturday's errors cost it a game it had led after the first inning.
The series now moves to Tampa Bay for Game 5 on Monday, Oct. 19, with another game scheduled for Oct. 20.
