The Patriots placed receiver Romeo Doubs on injured reserve Monday, and he will miss at least the next four games, per Pro Football Talk and NFL Trade Rumors. ESPN lists the injury as a shoulder. Pats Pulpit and Yahoo Sports say Doubs hurt the shoulder on a 42-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter of Sunday's 26-19 AFC East win over the Jets. Pats Pulpit gives his age as 26.
The move was part of a larger set of transactions. NFL Trade Rumors counted six moves in all and quoted the team's announcement. New England signed defensive back Elliott Davison to the 53-man roster from the practice squad and announced further practice squad moves. Davison has two games played and two solo tackles this season. The reporting we have does not say who else was moved or who takes Doubs' roster spot.
The four-game minimum has a date attached. Yahoo's Teddy Ricketson wrote that Doubs is eligible to return during New England's Week 11 bye. Only Yahoo makes that point. Read literally, it would mean he could miss four games and be available when the team returns after the bye. That is Yahoo's framing, and none of the other reports we have address a return date.
The touchdown against the Jets was Doubs' only catch of the game, on a single target, per our box score. {{game id=nfl_401873001}}
He has been a scoring threat all season. Through six games he has 14 catches on 24 targets for 261 yards and three touchdowns, an average of 18.6 yards per catch. His longest catch was 63 yards, against Pittsburgh in Week 2. His three touchdowns have come in the last three games: two in the 29-26 win at Buffalo on Oct. 4, with six catches for 58 yards, and the one Sunday. In the 45-17 win over Las Vegas he had one catch for 16 yards. He had 55 catches for 724 yards and six touchdowns in 16 games last season.
The loss comes while the team is playing well. New England is 4-2, second in the AFC East, and has won three straight. Yahoo's headline says the Patriots' receiver injuries "continue," so Doubs is not the first receiver to be hurt. The sources we have don't say who the others are.
The Patriots next play at Chicago on Thursday, Oct. 22, on a short week. That game will be the first without Doubs.
