The San Francisco 49ers re-signed running back Khalil Herbert on Tuesday, per the NFL's Official Transaction Wire, in a corresponding move that saw the team place running back Patrick Taylor Jr. on injured reserve.
Herbert, 28, was originally a sixth-round pick by the Chicago Bears in 2021 out of Virginia Tech before being traded to the Cincinnati Bengals. He had been released by San Francisco earlier this week before the team elected to bring him back.
Taylor's placement on injured reserve marks the second consecutive season he has been sidelined. Per Niners Nation, Taylor played 23 snaps last week, including one on special teams covering punts, before the injury ended his availability. Yahoo Sports reported the move comes as the 49ers prepare for a game without Christian McCaffrey, with Kaelon Black, Sincere McCormick, Zamir White, and Herbert expected to handle running back duties.
