Aaron Ashby now holds the record for scoreless innings by a reliever in a single postseason. He broke Andrew Miller's mark with a 1-2-3 ninth inning in Game 4 of the World Series on Tuesday night, per the Associated Press and ESPN. MLB.com's Anthony DiComo put the streak at 18 straight scoreless innings. Yahoo Sports' Jason Owens wrote that Ashby "has been critical for the Brewers on their postseason run and has now etched his name in the MLB record book." None of the summaries we have say what Miller's total was, so the 18 is the only figure for the streak.

The record came in a game Milwaukee lost. Tampa Bay won 4-3 in 12 innings at Tropicana Field, and the Brewers' Shane Drohan took the loss. Our box score has Ashby going 2.1 innings with no hits, no walks and three strikeouts on 31 pitches. His postseason ERA is 0.00. That is longer than the single ninth inning the AP and ESPN describe, so the record-breaking ninth was part of a longer outing. The outlets we have don't cover the rest of that outing, and we can't say from the box score when he entered or how the extra frames went.

The game was tied at 3 after nine, and Ashby's clean ninth helped keep it that way. The Rays scored twice in the 12th, and the game ended on a Ben Williamson single. Ashby's innings left Milwaukee in position to win, but the offense didn't score again after the fifth inning until the 12th. The Brewers stranded 10 runners and made two errors.

The workload fits how Ashby's season went. He made 75 appearances in 2026 and threw 89.1 innings with a 3.12 ERA, 13 wins, three losses and 116 strikeouts. He has been a multi-inning option for the whole year, and a 2.1-inning outing in the World Series is in line with that. His postseason ERA of 0.00 is well below his regular-season mark.

Milwaukee finished 103-59 and won the NL Central, and it still has the chance to finish this out. Tuesday's loss followed a 10-1 win at Tampa Bay on Monday and a 5-4 home win on Saturday. The teams meet again on Wednesday at Tampa Bay. The series then moves back to Milwaukee for games on Friday, Oct. 30 and Saturday, Oct. 31. Whether Ashby pitches again after throwing 31 pitches on Tuesday is not addressed in any of the reporting.
