The Milwaukee Brewers play Game 4 of the World Series at the Tampa Bay Rays tonight, first pitch 7 p.m. CT / 8 p.m. ET. Yahoo Sports says Milwaukee is "one win away from history" and "on the brink of their first-ever World Series championship." Sportsnet has the broadcast starting at 7:30 p.m. ET, and Yahoo's lead item promotes a free way to watch.
The outlets frame the stakes the same way. Yahoo notes that no team has rallied from an 0-3 deficit in the World Series, and only the 2004 Boston Red Sox have done it in any best-of-seven playoff series. Al Yellon at Bleed Cubbie Blue writes that a Brewers win would be the first World Series sweep since 2012, when the Giants swept the Tigers. He adds that he'd like to see the Rays win tonight.
Our own data does not match the sweep language. BenchScout's box scores show the Rays winning Game 3 on Tuesday, Oct. 27, by 4-3. Before that, Milwaukee won 10-1 at Tampa Bay on Monday, Oct. 26, and 5-4 on Saturday, Oct. 24. Those are the only three finals we hold for the series. Taken at face value, they put Milwaukee up 2-1 at most, and our schedule also lists games on Oct. 30 and Oct. 31 in Milwaukee. The archive may be missing games, and we can't reconcile the difference from our records. Readers should treat "0-3" and "sweep" as the outlets' claim, not something we have confirmed.
The form on both sides is clear either way. Milwaukee finished 103-59 and won the NL Central, and it carries a W5 streak in our table that includes the Game 3 loss, which is another sign our records are inconsistent. Tampa Bay was 98-64 and won the AL East. The Rays have the more urgent job tonight, having already lost 10-1 at home in this series before turning around a one-run game on Tuesday.
One detail comes from only one source. A r/baseball post calls it "interesting gamesmanship by the Rays to keep their season alive" that the roof and panels will be open for Game 4. The post doesn't explain the reasoning, and nothing else we have confirms the conditions.
Next up is tonight's Game 4 in Tampa Bay. If the Rays win, the series moves to Milwaukee for games listed on Oct. 30 and 31.
