The Chargers are signing veteran quarterback Jake Browning to a contract, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. The move comes with starter Trey Lance on injured reserve with a groin injury, leaving Los Angeles without a healthy primary option at the position.

Browning, 30, signed with the Vikings as an undrafted free agent in 2019 out of Washington. He was waived in the preseason but re-signed to the practice squad and later agreed to a futures deal with Minnesota. Most recently, he appeared in five games for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2025, completing 64.8 percent of his passes for 771 yards with six touchdowns and an average of 6.2 yards per attempt across 125 attempts.

Lance's window as the Chargers' starter has been brief. In four games this season, he completed 27 of 57 passes for 226 yards at a 47.4 percent completion rate, averaging 4.0 yards per attempt. The groin injury removes him from the equation as Los Angeles looks to stop a five-game losing streak—the team is 0-5 heading into a Sunday matchup at Kansas City.

The Chargers also agreed to terms with wide receiver Luke Grimm on the practice squad, per Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. Grimm, 25, signed with Los Angeles as an undrafted free agent out of Kansas following the 2025 NFL Draft and was among the final roster cuts. He has one reception for seven yards this season after spending time bouncing on and off the practice squad.

Browning's arrival gives the Chargers a veteran arm with NFL experience, though one coming off a modest statistical season. Los Angeles plays at Kansas City on Sunday, Oct. 18.
