The San Francisco Giants are calling up left-handed pitcher Matt Wilkinson for his major league debut, ESPN's Jeff Passan reported. Wilkinson, nicknamed "Tugboat," is a 23-year-old acquired in the Patrick Bailey trade and was originally a 10th-round pick out of junior college.
Since Wilkinson is not on the 40-man roster, the Giants will need to select his contract from Triple-A Sacramento. According to MLB Trade Rumors, San Francisco's 40-man roster is currently full, meaning the team will need to make a corresponding move to accommodate the promotion.
This season in Triple-A, Wilkinson has allowed 59 hits in 90 innings while striking out 96, per the reporting. The promotion continues San Francisco's youth movement in recent weeks as the team has become functionally eliminated from postseason contention.
