June Jones, the run-and-shoot coach who led Hawaii and SMU and spent three seasons as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, has died at 73. Yahoo Sports' Hawaii outlet reported that he died in Oregon. It said he had health problems this year and entered hospice two weeks ago, citing a close family friend. That is the only outlet with those details. The others in our reporting don't give a cause or a place.

The outlets stress different parts of his career. CBS Sports' Shehan Jeyarajah called him a pioneer of the run-and-shoot who engineered historic turnarounds at Hawaii and SMU. He also mentored the record-setting passers Timmy Chang and Colt Brennan. Yahoo's Nick Bromberg and the Hawaii outlet both call Jones the winningest coach in Hawaii football history. ESPN says he helped popularize the offense. Yahoo's SMU piece credits him with reviving the Mustangs and ending a 25-year postseason drought.

Hawaii has a personal tie to him. The Hawaii outlet notes he played quarterback there in 1973 and 1974 before coming back as coach. It describes his Rainbow Warriors teams as one of the greatest turnarounds in college football history. Another Yahoo piece says he brought the run-and-shoot to the islands and led a historic 2007 season. The Hawaii report adds that he turned down an opportunity to be the San Diego ... head coach. The feed summary cuts off there, so we can't say what the job was or when it came up.

Hawaii's current season is a long way from that peak. The Rainbow Warriors are 2-6 and 1-4 in the Mountain West, eighth in the conference. They have won one straight, 56-21 at NIU on Oct. 24, after losses to New Mexico (21-10) and Arizona State (30-12). They play at UTEP on Nov. 7.

SMU is in much better shape. The Mustangs are 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the ACC, second in the conference, with four straight wins. The latest was 59-20 over Cal on Oct. 24, and before that came 23-13 over Virginia and 25-16 over Boston College. They play at Syracuse on Saturday in their next game, the first for either of his former programs since the news. We don't have anything from either school on tributes or memorials. Arrangements for Jones haven't been reported in the material we have.
