Ladd McConkey will not return to Sunday's game at Arrowhead after suffering a concussion in the second quarter. Pro Football Talk's Josh Alper wrote that the Chargers trailed the Chiefs 9-3 when the receiver was ruled out. ESPN noted that this was McConkey's first action since he hurt his foot in Week 4.
The outlets differ on how it happened. Yahoo Sports' Ryan Young described an awkward tackle, and another Yahoo piece said McConkey slammed his head on the turf. Yahoo's feed also carried an earlier "evaluated for concussion" version of the story. None of the summaries we have gives a timeline for his return or says whether he has entered the league's concussion protocol, and no outlet quotes the team on his condition.
His day was short. In the game, the box score credits him with one catch for 17 yards on his only target. Before today he had 12 catches for 183 yards and a touchdown on 17 targets in four games. His game log shows no catches on two targets at Seattle on Oct. 4, which was Week 4 by the schedule. He did not appear in the Oct. 11 loss to Denver. A 2025 line of 66 catches for 789 yards and six touchdowns over 16 games gives a sense of what the offense has lost.
The Chargers can ill afford it. They came in 0-5 on a five-game losing streak, with their last three losses by 23-17 to Denver, 30-23 at Seattle and 24-16 at Buffalo. Yahoo's Young framed the afternoon as their search for a first win. The game is still live, and Kansas City leads 19-3 early in the third quarter. Los Angeles has 103 total yards to the Chiefs' 268, and Justin Herbert has thrown for 45 yards on 6-of-13 with an interception. Kimani Vidal, Theo Wease Jr. and Oronde Gadsden have each caught one pass, and Omarion Hampton has two.
Kansas City is 4-0 and leads the AFC West, with wins over Las Vegas, Miami and Indianapolis by three, 14 and three points. The Chiefs visit Seattle on Oct. 25. The Chargers are off to face the Rams on Nov. 1, so McConkey has two weeks to recover. Whether he plays in that game depends on how he does in the concussion process, and the reporting so far doesn't say.
