The NFL Players Association is calling for a "full investigation" into the medical care given to Jalen Hurts. It says the league has not opened one. In a statement Tuesday evening, the union said it "is not aware of any NFL investigation into the medical care provided to Jalen Hurts. In fact, the league previously informed the union that it did not plan to review the care he received." It added: "Before conclusions are drawn about how this situation was handled, there must be a full investigation into what occurred. Determining the facts is essential to ensuring players receive the highest level of care and protection going forward."
The statement answers the league directly. Earlier Tuesday, per Bleeding Green Nation, the NFL concluded that clearing Hurts to play with a superficial blood clot was "handled appropriately." The union's wording leaves a gap between those two positions. The league has reached a conclusion, and the union says it has seen no review behind it.
The medical details come from several outlets. Yahoo Sports' Teddy Ricketson wrote that Hurts is expected to miss the rest of the season with a deep vein thrombosis and multiple pulmonary emboli. SB Nation's Mark Schofield reported that Hurts played in the Eagles' Week 5 game against the Jaguars in London after being diagnosed with a superficial vein thrombosis in his left calf. The summaries we have don't say when the condition progressed or what the team knew at each stage. Those are the facts an investigation would examine. One Yahoo Sports item argues that if there is nothing to hide, the request should be easily met. That is opinion, not reporting.
Our game log shows what Hurts did in that London game, a 19-17 Jacksonville win that the Eagles lost. He went 21 of 40 for 220 yards and one touchdown, with no interceptions. He was sacked once for 10 yards and had two fumbles, neither lost. It was his fifth start. On the season he has 933 passing yards, eight touchdowns and three interceptions, with 13 sacks taken, and he has 107 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown. He has not played since that game.
Philadelphia is 2-4 and third in the NFC East, on a four-game losing streak. The latest loss was 25-14 to Carolina on Sunday. The Eagles host Dallas on Monday, Oct. 26. Reporting so far doesn't say who will start in Hurts' place or whether the club has responded to the union.
A.J. Brown, now a Patriots receiver, sent prayers and support to Hurts, per Pro Football Talk and Yahoo Sports. The summaries we have cut off before any further comment from him. New England is 4-2 and has won three straight. It plays at Chicago on Thursday in its next game.
The open question is whether the league will respond to the union's request. The NFLPA says it was told no review was planned. The NFL has said it considers the matter handled appropriately.
