Rams tackle Alaric Jackson will serve a one-game suspension, not two, for punching Bills edge rusher Bradley Chubb after Monday night's game. Hearing officer Derrick Brooks reduced the penalty on appeal. Pro Football Talk reported that Jackson will miss Sunday's game against the Cardinals. Adam Schefter, as relayed on r/nfl, said Brooks was jointly appointed by the NFL and the NFLPA.
The punch came after Buffalo's 37-34 win at SoFi on Oct. 12. Yahoo described Jackson as the veteran left tackle and said the game went to overtime. Yahoo also placed the incident after a loss "on Sunday," while our records and the other outlets have the game on Monday night. The outlets we have do not say why Brooks cut the penalty.
Chubb gave his account Wednesday, two days after the altercation. ESPN said he detailed his side of what happened. Yahoo's Jason Owens reported that Chubb told reporters he was not talking about Jackson's mom. The summaries we have don't say what Chubb did say, or what led to the punch.
NFL Trade Rumors, citing Michael Signora, added a detail the other outlets don't have. Jackson may still face a separate suspension tied to a domestic violence case that was settled this past year, and the NFL has not ruled on it. That means the reduced ban may not be the end of his discipline.
The absence matters because the Rams are 2-3 and third in the NFC West, coming off a loss to the Bills. Before that they beat the Eagles 24-20 on Oct. 4 and lost 30-26 at Denver on Sept. 27. Los Angeles will be without a starting-caliber tackle on Sunday against Arizona. Jackson has played in all five games this season.
For the Bills, the win moved them to 4-1 and first in the AFC East. Chubb has 17 tackles and 1.5 sacks this season. Buffalo plays at Las Vegas on Sunday.
Jackson's status for the Arizona game is settled. Whether the NFL rules on the domestic violence matter, and when, is the open question.
